Puppets are a great source of entertainment as well as education for about 2000 years. Kids love to watch puppet show and they enjoy playing, talking and singing with puppets. Puppets have a magical power in order to teach kids in a very funny and playful way i.e., getting education and learning along with a lot of entertainment. This magic of puppets play a huge role in learning process of our children.

In this modern era of science and technology, where kids use screen a lot which is not at all a healthy approach, puppet play a role of a cuddly friends, who talks and interact with them without any harmful effects on health. As, a parent, we should always encourage our kids to get involve in pretend plays using “learning toys” with real physical and mental growth, and puppets ang one of the best way to encourage pretend play…

There are a lot of benefits and ways through which we can educate our little ones by using the learning toys like puppets. So, here I am sharing some most important benefits and some easy ways to teach as well as to entertain our children…

Interaction And Communication Skills

Our little kids see puppets as a friend, with whom they can talk and interact, and this is where we as parents should play a part in order to boost and develop communication and social skills along with confidence, we can use finger or hand puppets and talk to our kids about their wishes, about the things that makes them happy or even their worries. By doing so, a strong bond will be developed not between parent and child but also with the puppet. This is one of the best ways to make a child frank with you and feel easy in discussing their thoughts with their parents.

Puppet play along with talking and singing rhymes and story telling boosts a child’s motor skills, cognitive skills, creativity and hand & eye coordination.

Effect of Parent’s Voice Along With Puppets

Baby hears and recognize mother’s voice and dad’s voice as well, even before they are born. If kids hear things in this voice along with their favorite puppets talking to them has a huge effect in boosting a child’s intelligence, confidence and mental growth. Parent’s voice is always the most understandable voice for kids, so, combining this voice with adorable puppets is a very effective approach towards a child’s learning process.

Nursery Rhymes & Storytelling

Using finger and hand puppets or even home-made cardboard puppets, we can tell story and sing rhymes with our little ones. Rhymes like “Fine little Ducks” or “Old McDonald had a Farm” or “This Little Piggy went to Market” and countless other rhymes of your child’s choice. This will boost their imagination power and vocabulary along with basic mathematical skills, phonics, everyday manners and thing we do in everyday life, depending on which story and rhyme we choose to enjoy along with puppet.

Learning About Everyday Life Scenarios

We can create a story or a scenario regarding anything, like helping others or taking care of our surroundings and how to behave, then use two puppets talking to each other regarding these issue in a childish way and easy language. This will help your child in learning every basic and important things we face in our lives along with manners and confidence. This way of education has incredible effects in child’s learning and development.

You can also ask your child to use puppets and tell you something about anything like studies in school, sports, meals, worries and anything they want to talk about by using their vocabulary and thoughts. You can also give them a scenario of your choice and give them some time to think, then ask them to pretend that two puppets are talking regarding the topic you gave them.

Appreciate them a lot with little rewards and claps when they are done. Learning in a playful way with adorable puppets and then getting a reward in the end…what is more better than that…😊

Confidence of Speaking in Public

All above benefits I have mentioned will not only lead to a better mental and physical health but also to a huge boost in confidence. When kids participate in puppets rhyme singing, storytelling or talks, they get the confidence as well to talk in front of people. This will benefit them throughout their life.

EASY WAYS TO USE AND MAKE PUPPETS:

Puppets can be bought from a store or we can make it at home using cardboard, colours and wooden sticks and some glue. We can create along with our little ones or just ask them to create a character according to their thoughts and then help them in gluing this to wooden sticks.

Puppets can be made using old socks along with some buttones and wool. Its all about creativity and fun…:)

A Puppet theater can be easily made using cardboard, cereal box or a shoe box. There is no need to buy expensive product, best thing is to use your imagination and creativity….

  4. Hi Sarah,
Puppets are great and I knew they were used for a reason but I didn’t realize the benefit of using them for confidence in public speaking. I always thought they were used for imagination purposes and to help tell stories. That is a great benefit. That is a great idea, thanks for this!

  5. What great ideas you have! I always enjoyed the little finger puppets, and even the washcloth finger puppets with my kids. We also had the bigger stuffed animal ones that they really enjoyed. I never really thought about how puppets can be used to help with public speaking. I’m seriously thinking of getting my own puppets just for that purpose! haha.

I have a couple of nephews who are between baby age and 4. Which types of puppets are better for the different ages, or does it not matter?

    • Hi Christina for your comments and appreciation. For your nephews, you can use any puppet of their own choice, it is not necessary to use any specific character.

  7. Good idea and really agreed with you. Especially concerning the self-confidence. Even if you know what your kid’s talents, but do not improve their self-confidence, in some way, it may give them a problem someday.

  8. I know first hand the benefits of puppets. I think that for one it sparks the imagination and lets the child talk or express something thru the puppets. I know growing up, my girlfriend and I used to have puppet shows which puppets we made and a stage. We got pretty fancy and it was a lot of fun. Very fond memories for sure!
